Glitter Tribe is a an artist management company that promotes and showcases local bands and musicians here in Austin, Texas. Pink and Silver caught up with Dani and Taylor, the two amazing women who run Glitter Tribe, and asked them all about their work and what it is like to be women in such a male dominated industry.
What is it like for women in your industry?
Dani: I think it’s a bit difficult to become established in the music industry because it is so male dominated. The biggest challenge is to be taken seriously. I think because it is so male dominated and being new on the scene, you get overlooked. If you’re too aggressive or you refuse to be pushed around you’re labeled as a “bitch” but if you’re nice and inexperienced you get pushed around. You need to be able to find that right balance.
Taylor: The music industry is definitely a boy's club but that doesn't really have an effect on us (besides people assuming Taylor is a guy's name!). I think people respect us because of our work ethic and ability to put on a good show. The fact that we're young women doesn't matter.
Ideally if we spoke to you again in a year what would you like to have accomplished by then?
Dani: We’d like to find a band to manage full time and also take a step back regarding our other work and try and do Glitter Tribe full-time
Taylor: We both have big dreams for Glitter Tribe! In the next year, establishing ourselves in Austin as a top booking/promoting firm and finding a band to manage full time would be awesome.
What is your favorite part of your job? What at the end of the day makes all the hard work worth it?
Dani: I think the most rewarding thing so far is when people who we’ve yet to meet contact us and tell us they want to work with us. It’s not just musicians, it’s been all sorts of people and I find that really cool. We’re obviously doing something right for people to reach out to us like they do.
Taylor: I love collaborating with Dani and discovering new bands. When I'm at our shows watching the bands perform and the crowd having a blast, I'm happy.
Where is your peaceful place to go and think here in Austin?
Dani: We tend to get a lot of work done at Rio Rita on the East Side. That’s where we started brainstorming the idea of Glitter Tribe in the first place. Plus, they have yummy cocktails!
Taylor: Anyplace by the water! Especially early morning kayaking on the lake.
How does the city of Austin impact your industry? Does it inspire your work in any way?
Dani: I’m originally from California so I always had the option of moving to LA and getting something started out there. But that would have meant that I would be working for someone else and not necessarily be able to have my own ideas heard. Austin is a great place to be because there are so many venues and so many talented musicians to meet. Everyone I’ve encountered for the most part has been super friendly, which makes networking so much easier. It wouldn’t be that way in LA, it’s so cutthroat out there.
Taylor: Austin being the "Live Music Capitol of the World" makes this the perfect city for people like us who are live music fans but it's also a very competitive city for musicians. There are SO many bands! It's inspiring to be surrounded by such a creative and innovative community.
What advice would you give to women trying to get into the music industry here in Austin?
Dani: Be nice! We’re outnumbered by men in this industry when it comes to Austin. You’ll get further in this industry if you keep a positive attitude when you meet like-minded people. You’d be surprised how you can help each other grow. We’re too old to be catty, we have to support one another and give praises.
Taylor: Just do it! There's a great network of supportive female entrepreneurs in Austin so don't be afraid to ask for help too.
What would you say are the thresholds to creating a good live music experience?
Dani: There are various factors really. I think the most important thing has to be that the band has to be good and interactive and the crowd has to interact back with the bands. It’s a bummer when you go to a show and you’re surrounded with people who are just on their phones the whole time.
Taylor: My criteria for a good live experience would include 1) a good band that has fun and interacts with the crowd, 2) an audience that actively listens to the band and who will support the band (whether it's giving them a like on social media, paying for the show, buying merch etc), and 3) a good drink :)
How can Austin locals help support the work you're doing and promote women in the industry?
Dani: I think just by going to our shows and introducing yourselves would definitely help.
Taylor: Come to our shows!
What are your upcoming band "must sees" for our readers?
Dani: As for local artists I have a few. They’re all local and they’re so SO good! Leopold and His Fiction, My Jerusalem, Hikes, Calliope Musicals, No Men, Runners High, Idle Ants
Taylor: My list is always rotating. I'm currently listening to The Staves, Wolf Alice, Tame Impala, Houndmouth...and all of the local bands we have booked for our upcoming shows in August!!
